Bacteria attack the dissolved and finely divided suspended solids, which weren’t removed by primary sedimentation. The effluent from secondary treatment undergoes tertiary treatment if it’s unacceptable.

The final treatment stage raises the quality of the effluent to the desired level to allow for its reuse, recycle, or release into the environment.
